Eating Crickets

Celine studying the menu...........somewhat shocked

A big plate full of crickets...........Yum

My quest of eating all that is weird and wonderful in Vietnam continued a few days ago when I found crickets on the menu. Celine and I had lunch at a place called Highway 4 and the crickets baked in pig fat seemed to good to pass by. They were tasty as well and compliments must be passed onto the chef. I washed them down with a delicious xeo liqueur which made for a great meal on a chilly winters day.

Christmas party 1 (next one on Christmas day)

Picture: Language Link CSOs, together for the Xmas picture

My school had organised a massive Christmas party last Saturday, where Dan and I both went to. It was in a beautiful five stars like restaurant, with massives gardens, fountains and smalls paths linking the different parts of the restaurant, it was beautiful. The buffet was amazing, with salmon sashimis - all you can eat - king prawns, sea food hot pots, a grill with all meats including Osttich, an amazing dessert table... Really, the kind a buffet you don't see everyday. I know I don't! I stuck with salmon sashimis and king prawns all night ( did have a couple of passion fruit mousse cups as well... hmmm!) so it was a pretty healthy evening for me, although I might have had a few too many beers, or was it a bad prawn? I can't say that I know for sure what caused it, but once at home I didn't feel so well and the next morning I was very very sick. Like I have rarely been sick. So I had to cancel all my classes for the day, and after the Xmas party, I can't say that it looked too good.
I went back to school today and everything was fine, I was really sorry and explained so, and I have never had any problems there since I started over four months ago, which I think played a lot in my favour too. So it's all good, I'm just a bit embarrassed to be honest.
Tonight, we went to see Avatar in the ultra modern Hanoi Megastar Cinema, and even though the story line is not for everyone - Fantasy/Sci Fi stuff doesn't really do it for my parents for instance... the graphisms were unbelievable, I mean esthetically the film was breathtaking and a new experience for me alltogether... plus, you know, sometimes it feels nice to go to a big modern cinema with a huge carton of pop corn and watch a big American film.... It feels like home :)

Spot the difference?

Ok, one of the shirts I am wearing is an original Calvin Klein. The other was bought off the street in Hanoi for $2.80. Can you spot the difference? I wear each shirt equally when working in Hanoi and to this day no one has made any comparison..........Hanoi is no Milan when it comes to fashion but in my opinion you can get away with a hell of a lot for literally the price of a litre of milk. For me it is another thumbs up for life in Hanoi...............

On a déménagé!! We've moved!!

Our cute little lane (at the end of the lane is a beautiful lake) - notre jolie petite ruelle (au bout de la ruelle : un beau lac)

Notre immeuble - our buildingWe have moved. It wasn't an easy move, with only two motorbikes and a taxi :)
The village where we live now is slightly further from our schools and from the centre of town, but we love our little bright flat (not as much as our flat in Sydney but close... very close) and the villagy atmosphere around here. You can buy milk and eggs from people on pushbikes coming around several times a day, and in the morning we get woken up by the sweet sound of about 10 roosters :) fun!
We will put some pictures of our flat soon but at the moment it is a bit too messy! We have been too busy to unpack properly.
I'm glad to have caught you up a bit now... love to all and hope to see you soon.

D’ailleurs ceci m’amène à mon dernier point : on a déménagé !

Everything has been going so fast lately; we haven’t had much time to update the blog…
There has been more and more things to do around school. I have been trained to be able to evaluate new student’s levels in order to decide in what class they should be placed. I have also had quite a few parents meetings for my kids and teenagers classes. I tend to tell the parents that their kid is awesome and has a really good attitude in class, even if it’s not always true, because some parents look quite severe and strict, and I remember only too clearly when I was a teenager and my parents would come back from a parents – teacher’s meeting… it was not always a joyful moment in the household!
I have been undergoing more dental surgery, but this time while waking up a bit woozy, I was apparently quite rude to the dentist and now he’s not happy with me and has advised I find another dentist… oops. I have apoligised and I feel really bad, but Dan says I did nothing wrong, I was just a little bit more annoying than usual (very funny) and the dentist is being a cry baby. But I like my dentist! This is quite mortifying.

Also, last but not least: we have moved. Let me explain properly in the next post.

Lessons Learnt

It is probably a fair comment to say that I never thought I would to be teaching at the front of a classroom. I definitely never envisaged myself doing so in Vietnam. Swapping the corporate life for English teaching has been different and I have had to pick things up as I go.

In Vietnam there is no training before you start teaching which means the students are not the only people learning. I learnt a valuable lesson the other day while teaching a class of kids. After finishing an activity they were all shouting, asking to play a game. Trying to incorporate the just completed lesson of the colours I decided to ask what things in the classroom were a certain colour. For blue they all pointed and rushed to the blue chairs. For white they ran to the whiteboard. They were all having a great time waiting on my every word before rushing in a storm of hysterics towards anything that had the new colour.

Things were going along well until I shouted "black". Some kids ran and pointed to the TV or their school bag. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a little girl coming in my direction and before I knew it............WHACK............!!!

As I was trying to catch my breath and regain some respectable composure I heard a little voice "your pants". With a swinging arm she had hit me right in the unmentionables with brutal force. I am 98% sure the innocent little girl had no evil intentions but I learnt a valuable lesson today. Hopefully tomorrows won't be as painful.

Street Food in Hanoi

Feast your eyes on my next article for Travel Vietnam. If this doesn't make you want to drop what you are doing and jump a plane to Hanoi then I don't know what will. Man I love the food here.
